Saturday 15th May saw NWRS members at Felin Bach, Caeathro, Caernarfon where we ran a special event station for Caernarfonshire Girl Guides at thier summer county camp.
The activities started at 2pm and ran through to around 5.30pm. Ofcom granted the callsign GG100GGC, GGC marking Girl Guiding Caernarfonshire.
We ran 2 HF ssb stations, one using 2 pump up masts and a full size G5RV for 20m and the other using a loop on 40m supported in part by a huge tree! Although the bands were not at their best some good contacts were made which showed the girls that you can in fact communicate without wires!
We taught the girls phonetics and they used them with UHF handies to pass greetings back to members. Tony taught Morse from the shack and the girls received a signed certificate once they could key their names satisfactorily.
It was a good day and we were blessed with good weather, the girls seemed to be having a wonderful time at their summer camp and were very grateful for our ‘station’.
