North Wales Radio Society - Newsletters

12 November 2006

Welcome to our newsletter for November.

Important announcement

There will be no meeting for the 16th November as the Town hall has been pre-booked for that date. The next meeting will be on the 23rd November starting at 7.30pm
The new venue is very nice, warm, and welcoming, with all the facilities we will need, good parking and disabled access as well, so we hope to see more members attending, and gaining in the benefits we offer.

Meeting held on the 9th November brief minutes.

The Chairman opened the meeting by welcoming all those who attended, and also welcomed three new members to the Society, who wish to take the foundation licence, which will start in January 2007. He also pointed out that the Society is looking for a publicity officer to oversee that the Societies aims and events are brought to a larger number of Radio Hams in the area. If you fancy this post please see the Chairman at the next meeting.

Secretary Report.

He reported that all updates have been completed for the following, RadCom, NWRS web pages, and news letter. A news letter will be sent to each member in November, to keep them abreast of Societies news and up-coming events. He also informed the members that he would contact Mr John Parry to see if he will come and give us another lecture on refurbishing old radios. He also outlined a number of proposals to be discussed by the members, to build upon the foundations already made in bringing to Society up to date, and more inline with educating new Licence holders in basic principles of radio.

Treasurers Report

He reported that the Society's funds were in very good order, and have recently been boosted by additional funds raised, some £400, by selling all the Society's surplus equipment. Outgoings this month were £145 payable to Practical Wireless for Advertising. He envisaged no further payments out of the Society's funds this year, giving us a good start for 2007.

Meeting report

The Chairman then opened the debate on the following proposals to be placed before members for ratification and implementation. Thanks to all who participated and placed comments, however due to lack of room, members will not be identified for each proposal.
  1. That all meetings held in the future shall have the following format. - Meeting will start at 8.00, with a welcome by the presiding Chairman. Then a Secretary's report, and a Treasurer's report, any questions, then on to the main business of the evening. Taking a break at 9.00pm for tea and refreshments, with closing thanks by the Chairman at around 9.45pm. After some discussion the members agreed that this should be implemented at all future meetings, thereby keeping the members and the committee abreast and transparent.
  2. A proposal that a letter be written to members of the Dragon Club, to ask if they wish to join forces with us to organise a Rally for 2007, and a joint effort in any event organized by both.

  5. Members also wished that the Society would actively look for a new venue and the possibility for resurrection of our Radio Exhibition for 2007.
  6. That a date be set for June or July for the 'party in the park', which was such a success in 2006, with the possibility of a marquee to be erected to cater for more stall holders and exhibitions.
  7. That a new venue be discussed, as an alternative to the town hall. Richard GW0VMW agreed to investigate on the Society's behalf, and report back in the new year.
  8. Richard also agreed to give the members a talk on SOTA (Summits on the Air) in the future to explain this exciting aspect of our hobby.
  9. That the society should participate in the Jamboree on the Air and assist young guides and scouts to obtain their communication badges. This will be in November 2007.
  10. The members also wished to have a talk on the Repeater GB3GO, to update them, and assist newly licence members in activating repeaters in general.
  11. A visit to RAF Valley to be arranged for the New Year, date sometime in May or June.
  12. A request was made to members with an expertise in any Amateur radio subjects to come forward and assist in our education.
  13. The members also wished that several times throughout the year, we hold basic tutorials on the following items - this will greatly help newly licensed members to get a grasp of the hobby and enable then to further their hobby.
These are. Propagation, setting up a shack, grounding, making antennas and erecting them, what time is best to listen for propagation on each band, and more advanced, chasing DX. Also data modes like, SSTV, PSK31, and interfacing a computer to the Radio.
All the above was agreed by the members attending.

The Chairman then thanks all who had made proposals and added to the debate, and closed the meeting at 9.00, where the members retired for well earned tea and coffee. He hoped that members with further ideas and suggestions would please place them before the members and committee, at any other questions, held at each meeting held.
